FAMAS F1 (first-generation, not NATO-standard) held by mobile and departmental gendarmerie units. Being run down: some retired in 2025, and a replacement 5.56 weapon with optics and accessories is being procured (model not chosen as of the March 2026 answer). Will move to Previously issued once the replacement is awarded.

Deployment began 2016.

Tactical unit: the reinforced "Sabre" PSIG (pelotons de surveillance et d'intervention, patrol and intervention platoons), the Gendarmerie's specialist intervention platoons. Not general issue. HK G36 5.56 mm for PSIG Sabre per the 2017 ministry answer; deployment to the forces began in 2016.

Tactical unit (SWAT). GIGN (the Gendarmerie's national intervention group) adopted the CZ 806 BREN 2 in 7.62x39mm with a compact barrel in 2017, to replace most of its HK416s.
