Duty Arms Index

Duty pistol calibers: 9mm vs .40 vs .45

79.6% of agencies with a sourced duty pistol issue a 9mm. The rest are mostly .40 S&W and .45 ACP, often agencies that have not yet transitioned (see each agency's history).

Data coverage: Based on 799 agencies in the Duty Arms Index with a current, sourced pistol entry; one pistol per agency (its primary duty entry where sourced). Counts include only current entries with a public source; agencies not yet in the index, or without a sourced entry for this item, are not counted, so treat shares as a picture of the Duty Arms Index, not of every U.S. agency. Data last updated Oct 10, 2026.
